JC Hormel Nature Center Rain Garden

The CRWD has taken the lead in constructing a Rain Garden Demonstration Site at the JC Hormel Nature Center in Austin.  This Rain Garden site will collect, store and filter the runoff from the parking lot at the Nature Center.  Presently, the runoff flows into a ravine, which then outlets into Dobbins Creek.

A rain garden is a colorful perennial planting designated to capture and filter rain water that is otherwise runoff.  It is a garden in a shallow depression.  A rain garden holds and filters the runoff for a few hours, or a day at the most.

Dan Regner, Chairman of the CRWD, has planned and engineered this project and organized several partners who are volunteering their time and equipment.  The volunteers for this project include:

Austin Park & Rec - Site Prep Work

Super Fresh Produce - Plants & Plant Selection

Lee Hanson Excavating - Backhoe & Operator

Bustad Dozing & Excavating - Skid Steer & Operator

Mower County - Tile, Topsoil & Sand

City of Austin - Mulch, Leaf Compost, Rock & Rip Rap

Friends of the Hormel Nature Center

- Funding for the Native Plants; and

CRWD Board of Managers, Mower SWCD, USDA

NRCS and Nature Center Staff - Planting & Mulching
